"I´ve always believed you get out of life what you put into it!" says Karl. "Rewards do come from maintaining a good work ethic, taking responsibility seriously and keeping yourself motivated."

Karl has come a long way from his birthplace of Chicago, Illinois. As a young man, he sought "greener and warmer pastures"--so-to-speak--and found himself in the east Bay area of San Francisco. While attending college, he met his darling wife, Victoria.

One summer, early in their marriage, the Nettgens decided to go camping in state parks along the Oregon Coast. After spending some time in the Gold Beach area, they could not get the place out of their minds. The couple purchased a bare land lot and came up to work on it whenever possible.

Each visit to Gold Beach felt more and more right. Having to turn back for the east bay of San Francisco became increasingly difficult.

"Coming north, we could feel the tension leave us. The small town atmosphere and friendliness wrapped around us like a comfortable blanket. Returning south, the stress and traffic became unbearable," recalls Karl.

The decision was made to take the risk, pull up stakes and live the dream on Oregon´s South Coast. Karl and Victoria put their work ethics to the test and dug in. He soon found a fit in real estate sales, and she started a landscaping maintenance business.

Karl has been with Century 21 for the past nine years. He quickly proved himself to be an excellent agent, surpassing his peers in sales and continually receiving awards at both the local and regional levels. In addition, he is an active, volunteer member of the Curry County Planning Commission. This position allows him access to current information that may affect the ever-changing dynamic of the local real estate market as well as understanding the complexities of land development.

The Nettgens still live on that same property and have recently celebrated their 21st anniversary. Along with their son, Eric, and several critters: Java the dog, Fezzywig the cat, a bunny and goldfish--many dreams have come true. Amidst their busy lives, the family takes advantage of the many nearby opportunities to camp, fish and walk on the beach. Victoria tends to her thriving gardens. Karl and Eric are avid ATVers! One of their favorite places to ride is the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. (They always tread lightly and ride in designated areas only)

"You couldn't drag me away kicking and screaming!" says Karl, grinning from ear to ear. "This truly is the Mayberry RFD of the Oregon Coast."

I have been living on the south Oregon Coast for over 20 years. Emigrating from the east coast, I can vividly remember my first look at the Pacific Ocean in Curry County. It was one of the most beautiful sites I had ever seen. My husband Les, a classical guitar builder, and I raised our two daughters here. We have been extremely pleased with the education they received in Gold Beach, both graduated with honors. I served as a volunteer member of the Central Curry School District for many years. I would be happy to answer your questions about our District's education. I am the President of the Rotary Club of Gold Beach and am very proud of the many accomplishments our club is responsible for. Together, Les and I founded the Pistol River Concert Association, website a concert series that has been bringing high quality music to the local community for over twenty years. Laurel Gerkman has an endless curiousity for human and physical landscapes. Early adulthood was spent working in several resort towns from the Maritimes to the Rocky Mountains. Her forte became tourism and public relations. Realizing that advancement was limited without a formal education, she decided to attend college. Seven years of juggling jobs, classes and a budget was rewarded. In 1995, Laurel graduated from Humboldt State University , Summa Cum Laude, majoring in Geography with a focus on rural communities.

At that time, Laurel made her move Gold Beach, always attracted by the dynamic created between the Rogue River and Pacific Ocean. Here, she met her husband, Mark, a long-time Merchant Marine. He is currently employed as an Officer with Military Sealift Command. Mark´s career takes him all over the world and could allow the couple to live just about anywhere. Yet, this is the place they have chosen to make their home base.

"It´s uncrowded and has a pleasant, moderate climate," says Laurel, "and we love the dramatic coastline and overall pristine environment."

For the past ten years, Laurel has found several comfortable niches within the community, including real estate sales.

"It allows me to utilize my educational background, and I enjoy the multi-tasking," she says, "It´s like a puzzle, putting all the pieces together and making things happen."

In addition to her occupation, Laurel is an avid historian. She has volunteered hundreds of hours to the local Curry Historical Society museum conducting research and creating exhibits. One of her achievements was to restore our local Pioneer Cemetery and write a interpretive walking tour booklet, Renderings. Also, her involvement with local theater troupe has brought several living history programs into production.

Recently, Laurel has been breaking into non-fiction freelance article writing. To date, she has published several articles that feature elements of our south coast, both past and present. Several more are on the burner. You will find her work in Oregon Coast Magazine, Ruralite and Cascade Compass.

Leisure time for the Gerkmans is often spent exploring the southern Oregon with their canine pal, "Bubba". Even though Mark was born and raised here, the couple finds there are always new and exciting things to discover nearby amidst the great outdoors and area events.

"Sure, we go to the cities for an occasional culture-fix, but otherwise, where else would one rather be than right here?"

Gloria has lived in the Gold Beach area since 1975. She and her husband raised their two children, started a fishing business and have been productive members of the community. Gloria is an active member of the Curry Sportfishing Association, helping every year with the annual derby fundraiser, and attendance at many meetings both locally and out of town. Most recently Gloria has become a member of the Gold Beach Rotary Club.
